Project summary
The alluvial aquifers of the Sava River are the main sources of drinking water in the Pannonian part of the Republic of Croatia and are classified as strategic groundwater reserves and protected by the Republic of Croatia. Within the project hydrological, hydrogeological, hydrogeochemical, isotopic and ecological research at selected locations in the upper and middle valley part of the Sava River Basin. The project will process available meteorological, hydrological, hydrogeological, hydrogeological, hydrogeochemical and ecological data while water sampling will be done at multiple locations at different time intervals, depending on the type of analysis. As part of the aforementioned research, and for the purpose of implementing and fulfilling the project objectives, groundwater levels will be monitored at selected locations, as well as in-situ physicochemical parameters, ionic composition of water, stable isotopes of water, nitrates and radon, granulometric composition and biological and microbiological parameters. It is expected that the use of the available historical data and newly created within the project will enable the definition of the impact of surface and groundwater on the hydrological, hydrodynamic, hydrochemical and ecological characteristics of the Sava River in the research area. It is also expected that the interdisciplinary approach of the project will generate new knowledge about hyporheic zones and the relationship between the Sava River, its tributaries and associated aquifers, but also contribute to the sustainable management of strategic groundwater resources.
Project goals
- Determine the surface and groundwater impact on the hydrological, hydrodynamic, hydrochemical and ecological characteristics of the Sava River in the upper and middle valley part of the basin in the Republic of Croatia.
- Establish the long-term monitoring of the Sava River, its tributaries and alluvial aquifers.
- Determine the isotopic and chemical composition of the surface and groundwater in the study area.
- Determine the nitrate origin and related processes in the surface and groundwater in the study area.
- Identify hyporheic zones in the study area.
- Investigate the characteristics of the hyporheic zone of the Sava River from Medsave to Rugvica.
- Analyze and determine the composition, density and dynamics of the hyporheic zone (hyporheic) communities conditioned by the hydroecological seasonal conditions of low and high waters.
